Attendance and No Child Left Behind
Attendance is a critical issue for schools with the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act. A school can be placed on the Improvement List by the state if there attendance percentage falls below 91.2%. It is important that children be at school daily to receive the instruction and skills that are necessary for success. Owasso Public Schools' policy on attendance is as follows:
The maximum number of absences that a student may have will be TEN per semester. The maximum includes both excused and unexcused absences. Documentation must be turned into the attendance office by 3:00 PM on the day the student returns to school. Absences for court appearances required by subpoenas and funerals of immediate family members will not count as one of the student's ten absences.
The Compulsory Education Law states "If a child is absent without valid excuse four or more days or parts of days within a four week period, the parents shall be notified. If the child is absent from school for ten or more days or parts of days within a semester without a valid excuse, the attendance officer shall immediately report such absences to the district attorney in the county wherein the school is located for juvenile proceedings pursuant to Title 10 of the Oklahoma Statutes. (Oklahoma Statutes, Title 70, SCC. 1--106.)"
1. If your child is absent from school, call the attendance number to report the absence between 8:00 am and 9:30 am each day he/she is absent. 918-272-9458
2. Any student who is absent is considered unexcused until a parent calls the attendance office.
3. If an absence is anticipated please contact the attendance secretary ahead of time.
4. Excessive absences will be reported to the District Attorney's office.
5. Any child with a temperature of 100 degrees will be excluded from school. Children MUST be fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever medication before returning to school.
A Parent Involvement room is set up in our school cafeteria off from the stage. Parents can access their child's grades and check out reading materials to assist them in various skills.
We appreciate having parents come in and help during the school day with running copies, assisting students with reading and math, and helping with programs. Our Parental Involvement will include but are not limited to parent meetings, technology tutoring, back to school nights, open house as well as individual and group conferences. Communication will include parent phone calls, emails, progress reports, and newsletters throughout the school year. The newsletter will include strategies, programs and links that the parents can utilize with their children. (Also, there is a link to resources on our school website.)
School Way (formerly School Connect) is now available for parents to sign up for updates about school cancellations, emergencies, etc. Please check the Owasso website www.owassops.org to access the instructions for downloading theSchool Way and register.
Grades can be checked online for Grades 3 thru 5 by accessing the Parent Portal. Should you have any questions on trying to register, please call the school at 272-2204.
